Lee returns to RAW tonight with the new nickname “Bearcat” after being away from the show since his August 2 RAW victory over Karrion Kross. He demanded a match with R-Truth, Drake Maverick, Drew Gulak, or anyone else, interrupting Akira Tozawa, who was in the ring and unhappy at losing to WWE 24/7 Champion Reggie.
Lee returned to the arena with his beard and easily overpowered Tozawa, smashing him and putting him away with a powerful powerslam from his shoulders in the middle of the ring. Lee then marched silently to the back of the crowd.
In recent weeks, we’ve highlighted how WWE has scheduled Lee in dozens of dark and live event matchups as they try to figure out what’s best for him going ahead. Before the September 20 RAW from Raleigh, Lee earned the nickname “Bearcat” when he squashed enhancement talent James Alexander.
Bearcat Wright, a prominent African American pro wrestler in the 1950s and 1960s who was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame’s Legacy Wing in 2017, is thought to be the inspiration for the nickname. Bearcat Brown, an innovative African American wrestler who mostly performed in the Memphis area in the 1960s and 1970s, may have inspired the nickname.
