After his victory over last Friday’s Hell In a Cell bout with SmackDown Tag Team Champion Rey Mysterio, WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns gave his State of the Universal Title Address on tonight’s SmackDown on FOX. During the main event segment, Paul Heyman stated that Reigns has eliminated the whole division in less than a year, naming Edge, “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman, Kevin Owens, Daniel Bryan, and SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Mysterios as victims. Heyman went on to say that they were being forced to do something they’d never done before because they don’t have any other option because Reigns is the only one left to challenge. That’s when the music started playing, and Edge came out with a loud pop.
Edge made his first appearance since Reigns retained his WrestleMania 37 title over Bryan and Edge in a Triple Threat match. Edge went into the ring and brawled with Reigns, ejecting him from the ring. Edge smashed Reigns repeatedly into the announce table after delivering a flying clothesline from the apron.
Edge brought him back to the ring, but Reigns countered with a Superman Punch. Edge stopped Reigns with a Spear as he attempted to use a chair. Edge then put the chair under Reigns’ head and brought in another, but Jimmy Uso knocked him off the apron and resumed the attack from ringside. Edge countered by sending Uso to the steel ring stairs. Edge then used a Spear to put Uso through the barrier. Edge re-entered the ring, but Heyman and Reigns had already left the stage. Edge screamed out that if Reigns needs him, he’ll be right there.
On tonight’s SmackDown, Rollins teamed up with Bayley to defeat SmackDown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair and Cesaro. Then Rollins confronted Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville, attempting to persuade them that he should be Reigns’ next opponent. Pearce stated that they are not ready to make that decision yet, while Deville stated that they are considering it.
While Edge vs. Rollins has been predicted for SummerSlam, Reigns is also expected to defend against a returning John Cena. WWE’s Money In the Bank pay-per-view is still scheduled for July 18 before SummerSlam on August 21.
We will keep you posted on what WWE has planned for Edge, Reigns, and Rollins after this.
